You can assume that your property or school has lead-based paint and follow the lead-safe work practices. You or your contractor may also check for lead using a lead test kit. Please note that these kits must be EPA-approved. They are available at hardware stores.  There are also Do-it-yourself available. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has not evaluated these kits. Some of those kit have produced false positives

You may hire a certified professional to check for lead-based paint. These folks are certified inspectors or risk assessors. They will tell you if you have lead-based paint, where it is located, and whether there is a lead hazards from lead in the paint, dust or soil. This professional will tell you what actions to take to address these hazards.

Renovate Right is a pamphlet which gives important lead hazard information to families, child care providers and schools. When the certified professional comes out to do the work he must give you a copy of the pamphlet before starting the job.  Ask the contractor to follow the work practices on pages 9 and 10 of the pamphlet. The practices explain containing the work area, minimizing the dust, and proper thorough cleaning at the end of the job.

What do you do if you do have lead paint?

·       Have the easily removed item removed if it can be done without creating lead dust.

·       Cover the lead-based paint- which is not a long term solution.

·       Have the lead-based paint removed by professionals who have been certified and trained
